It was the 23rd minute when Kroos said enough was enough, pulling up during a Valencia counterattack and looking over to the dugout with a concerned expression on his face. He was given treatment on the touchline and it was decided that he should be taken off. He came back on to the pitch to defend a set piece and was subsequently replaced by Illarra, the German making his way straight down the tunnel and to the dressing rooms.
As if in shock, the Bernabéu faithful hardly applauded Kroos as he traipsed off. Unease spread throughout the stands ahead of the second leg against Juve. There was no need to wait for Carlo Ancelotti's post-match verdict to realise that the midfield dynamo could be a serious doubt for the vital Champions League encounter.
However, a day later things are looking brighter. After an hour of tests at the Sanitas La Moraleja Clinic on Sunday morning, no muscular damage was detected, so Kroos should be fit to feature against the Serie A champions. The 25-year-old took to social media to put the fans' minds at ease: "Thank you for your kind messages! I've just been through the examination. Don't worry. Let's focus on Wednesday!" he posted.
