    J. Cole’s ‘G.O.M.D.’ Isn’t The Video You Were Expecting, But It’s The One That You Need

    J. Cole has already proven himself a top tier MC, but over the past few years, the Fayetteville, North Carolina spitter has been racking up a number of stand-out music videos, as well. Cole’s latest, “G.O.M.D.,” is a period piece that finds the rapper on a colonial-era plantation, freeing slaves and sparking a revolution.

The Lawrence Lamont-directed clip, which dropped on Monday (Mar. 23), opens with Cole looking out of the window at the field as the white plantation owners return home in time for dinner.
The entire clip has a cinematic look and hardly feels like a traditional rap video at all. Cole, who runs the house, has a hard time gaining respect from the field workers until he swipes the plantation owner’s guns and distributes them amongst the rest of the slaves. From there, the slaves take over the plantation, start a bonfire and celebrate freedom.

“G.O.M.D.” appears on Cole’s 2014 Forest Hills Drive LP and is marked by it’s heavy drums, braggadocios rhymes and an interpolation of Lil Jon’s 2002 rap hit “Get Low.” So while the song is guaranteed to get the party started, Cole took this a step further with the video and decided to stimulate your mind, as well.
