Elton John is leading a boycott against Dolce & Gabbana following the fashion designers’ comments to a magazine calling children born through in vitro fertilization “synthetic.”

On Sunday, John, who has two children born to the same surrogate mother, went on Instagram to call for a boycott against Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana’s fashion brand. “How dare you refer to my beautiful children as ‘synthetic,’” John wrote. “And shame on you for wagging your judgemental little fingers at IVF—a miracle that has allowed legions of loving people, both straight and gay, to fulfil their dream of having children. Your archaic thinking is out of step with the times, just like your fashions. I shall never wear Dolce and Gabbana ever again.”

The controversial statements came from a recent interview with Italian magazine Panorama, in which the two said they opposed gay adoptions.

“I am not convinced by those I call children of chemicals, synthetic children,” Dolce said. “Rented uterus, semen chosen from a catalogue … psychiatrists are not ready to confront the effects of this experimentation.”

Other celebrities such as Courtney Love, Al Roker, and Victoria Beckham have echoed John’s sentiments on their Twitter accounts, while supporters have been using the hashtag #BoycottDolceGabbana. The boycott has also led families with children born through IVF to post pictures of their children conceived through IVF on Twitter to demonstrate further support.

Dolce and Gabbana released a statement in response to the boycott.

“We firmly believe in democracy and the fundamental principle of freedom of expression that upholds it,” Gabbana said. “We talked about our way of seeing reality, but it was never our intention to judge other people’s choices. We do believe in freedom and love.”

The fashion icons have spoken out before on same-sex marriage and gay adoption. According to a 2006 interview, Gabbana believes a “child needs a mother and a father.”
