With her incredible track ‘Power’ set to make waves in the UK on the 23rd Febuary, we had a little chat with Sophie and The Bom Bom’s about all things music.
You are well known for writing some amazing songs for the likes of Ke$ha and Kendrick Lamar. Does the writing process differ when writing a track for your own album? YES, WRITING FOR OTHER PEOPLE IS TRYING TO SAY WHAT THEY WANT TO SAY AND WRITING FOR MYSELF IS SPEAKING MY HEART AND MY TRUTH TO THE WORLD.
Talk us through the writing and recording process of your upcoming single ‘power’? I WROTE THE SONG AS PEOPLE HAVE A FUNNY RELATIONSHIP WITH POWER AND MONEY WHETHER THEY HAVE IT OR WHETHER THEY WANT TO BE AROUND IT OR WHETHER THEY WANT IT. I’VE SEEN IT A LOT IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY AND I GOT FED UP WITH IT. REALLY, AT THE END OF THE DAY IT’S NOT WHAT MAKES OUR HEART BEAT.
Style and genre are a huge part of the music industry, how important do you think it is as an artists to establish your own musical identity? I THINK IT’S IMPORTANT TO WRITE WHAT INSPIRES YOU AND IS TRUE TO WHO YOU ARE BUT I DONT THINK THAT YOU SHOULD FORCE IT BECAUSE YOU WANT TO BE SEEN AS SOMETHING. IT SHOULD COME NATURALLY.
What excites you most about bringing your music over to the UK? I THINK THAT THE UK IS SO INNOVATIVE AND CREATIVE AND IT HAS INSPIRED ME. I STARTED WHEN I BROKE OUT OF SONGWRITING AND CAME TO THE UK AND STARTED WRITING MY OWN MUSIC. I REALLY FEEL LIKE I CAN BE MYSELF HERE, AND THAT’S EXCITING FOR ME.
Any favourite UK acts that you enjoy listening to? I LOVE AMY WINEHOUSE AND GEORGE MICHAEL – I THINK ON THIS TRIP TO THE UK I MIGHT GO SEEK OUT ALL HIS OLD HAUNTS!
Finally, people are always talking about achieving big goals, but is there something really small and a little different that you guys would like to achieve this year? I WOULD LOVE TO TOUR EUROPE AS I LOVE PLAYING LIVE – AND ALSO GETTING TO MEET AS MANY BOM BOM’S AS POSSIBLE.
